Rwanda, with its capital city of Kigali, is a petite landlocked nation nestled in East Africa. It shares borders with Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south, and Congo to the west.
The country's topography is dominated by a central plateau adorned with steep mountains and deep valleys, earning Rwanda the moniker "The land of a thousand hills." The plateau boasts an average elevation of approximately 1,700 meters. Notably, Rwanda's key geographical features lie on the western edge of the plateau, including the renowned Virunga chain of volcanoes, which stretches toward Congo and the Ugandan border. It is within the Virunga range that Rwanda's foremost tourist attraction resides: the majestic mountain gorillas.
To the east, the towns of Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangungu offer breathtaking vistas of Lake Kivu. Witnessing this region firsthand, one quickly realizes that "The land of a thousand hills" scarcely does justice to Rwanda's remarkable scenery.
From Gisenyi, visitors can journey across the border into Congo and explore the city of Goma, which was ravaged by the Nyiragongo volcano, one of the active Virunga volcanoes on the Congolese side, erupting on January 17, 2002. Additionally, Rwanda boasts Nyungwe National Park, situated in the Albertine Rift montane rainforest, recently granted National Park status. This rainforest harbors a unique ecosystem, hosting troops of over 300 colobus monkeys—accounting for 25% of Africa's primate population. Nyungwe undeniably stands as a primate paradise.
Rwanda's rich history and culture have long fascinated visitors. Once regarded as a mysterious kingdom with a formidable military force, Rwanda was cautiously navigated by Arab traders and great Nile explorers. Initially part of the German East African colony, Rwanda became a Belgian protectorate after World War I. En route to Nyungwe National Park, travelers can explore the National Museum of Butare, which offers captivating exhibits on the history and culture of one of East Africa's majestic pre-colonial kingdoms. Indeed, Rwanda beckons visitors with a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered.
